Morenci Turquoise Necklace and 2 Pair Earrings

Natural High Grade Morenci Turquoise NEcklace Set In Sterling Silver This fabulous necklace was made by Navajo artist Luke Yazzie and designed by Carl W. Luthy. The stones used are from the Morenci mine with good matrix. The Morenci turquoise is mined in southeastern Arizona. Morenci turquoise is well known because it was one of the first American turquoises to come on the market. It is very difficult to obtain now because the mine is depleted. It is a collectible turquoise. Morenci turquoise is prized for its beautiful color and the iron pyrite in the turquoise. The colors range from light to dark blue and sometimes green. About Carl W Luthy-Native American Art Trader & Designer. Carl died in 1975 Some very fine Navajo artists working for Carl did very distinctive and recognizable work. Much of his jewelry has the leaf and flower design. His sign, a stick figure represents the designer instead of the maker. The head is a C, the arms are a W and the legs have an L in them. It consists of a stick figure drawing of a man with an erection. The bottom picture on the left shows his sign. I will be glad to e-mail you larger photos of this piece, it hard to see the sign. His work has been published in the Arizona Highway Magazine, as well as Ray Manley’s Southwest Indian Arts & Crafts. Bottom pendant measures 4″ high, set in shadow box. The total length of the necklace is 15″ long. Excellent condition, I have had this piece in my collection since the seventies.
